Black Monukka Seedless

Large, purpleish-black, sweet & crisp. Does NOT require as much summer heat as Thompson. Fresh or raisins. Early to mid season. 100 chill hrs. Self-fruitful.

Canadice Seedless

An early ripening red seedless variety. Derived from Himrod. Extremely winter hardy. Table grape for the home-owner. 100 chill hrs. Self-fruitful.

Concord, California

Large, oblong. Blue-black, seeded. Sweet flavor. Good for mild coastal & cold winter area. Not subject to Pierce’s Disease. Good for table, juice & jelly. Cane or spur prune. Self-fruitful, 100 chill hrs. Bears: Sept.

Concord Seedless

American grape. Sport of Concord. Large, oblong fruit that is SEEDLESS (or seeds are very rare). Bluish-black skins with green flesh. Distinctive Concord flavor. Table use as well as juice & jelly. Cane or spur prune. Excellent for arbors. Self-fruitful, requires 100 chill hrs. Bears: September.

Interlaken Seedless

Hybrid from Thompson & American Seedless. More cold hardy than Thompson. Less heat to ripen. Pale green in color, sweet & crisp. Early harvest. Cane or spur prune. 100 hrs. Self-fruitful

Flame Seedless

Medium sized fruit. Red skin with firm flesh & great eating quality. Very productive. Skin color may vary in extremely hot areas. Table grape & raisins.  Cane prune. Use on arbors, wires or fence. Self-fruitful & requires 100 chill hours. Bears: late July.

Golden Muscat

American/European hybrid. Large egg-shaped fruits are pale, golden-yellow when ripe. Characteristic Muscat flavor & aroma100 chill hrs. Self-fruitful. Cane prune.

Perlette Seedless

Pale green. Crisp & juicy. Larger than Thompson & 2 weeks earlier. Requires less summer heat than Thompson to ripen. Bears late July. Spur prune.

Thompson Seedless

Medium sized. Pale-green. Most popular grape in Calif. Enjoy fresh or make raisins. Very productive, thin to increase fruit size. Cane prune. Self-fruitful, 100 chill hours. Bears early August.

Chill Hours

Cold chill hours can be a little confusing. Basically they are the number of hours below 45°F subtracting the number of hours above 60°F between the months of November and February.

If you live in or around any of these areas, your average chill hours are:

  • Malibu, Ventura, Santa Barbara: ± 300 Hours
  • San Fernando Valley, Fillmore, Simi Valley: ± 800 Hours or less
  • Santa Clarita, Lancaster: 800 Hours or more

There is no simple test for “Chill Hours” and they are calculated as an average. Each winter season differs in total chill hours accumulated, which can affect fruit production. Most of the fruit trees we carry at Otto & Sons are classified as low chill requirement and are better matched for our Southern California chill hours.
