Fuyu-Jiro
“Apple Persimmon” Trees are Standard size, needing no pollinizer, but require 200 chill hours. Medium size fruit ripens in the Fall. The fruit is flat shaped, crunchy when ripe, non-astringent. Hardy, attractive tree practically pest & disease free. Slice ¼” thick (or thin); serve as snack when watching TV. Great for dried fruit also!
Giant Fuyu
Larger, not as flat as Fuyu. Crunchy when ripe like Fuyu. Sweet, flavorful, non-astringent. Easy to grow, cool or hot climates. Standard size trees, no pollinizer needed. Requires 200 chill hours. Fall is the time for Persimmons, fresh / dried.
Hachiya
Large, deep orange-red, acorn shaped. Hot summers are required to mature the fruit. Sweet & flavorful, astringent until soft-ripe. Mature fruit can be frozen & thawed to ripen. Standard size trees, no pollinizer needed. 200 chill hours and bears in the Fall. Very productive.
Cheryl’s EASY Persimmon Cookies
Cream together: 1 cup sugar, 1/2 cup shortening & 1 egg.
Add to creamed mixture:
1 cup persimmon pulp (any ripe variety)
1/2 tsp. Salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. Nutmeg
1 tsp. ground clove
1 tsp. Baking soda
2 cups flour
1 cup raisins
1 cup chopped walnuts
Bake at 375°, about 10 minutes. Makes about 3 dozen.
They go great with a tall glass of cold milk!
