20th Century  Apple Pear

Super sweet & juicy w/ crisp apple texture. Ripens Aug. to Sept. Keeps well. Chill hrs. 400. Self-fertile or pollinate w/ Shinseiki or another pear for a larger crop.

Shinseiki

Standard size tree, needing 350+ chill hours & bearing in late July thru early August. Juicy, sweet, refreshing & crisp like an apple. Easy to grow. Keeps well. Bright yellow skin, snow white flesh. Vigorous bearing (second year). Medium size fruit.

Bartlett

#1 Pear in the world! Standard size tree that is self-fruitful & needs 800 chill hours. Bears in August. Large size, waxy yellow skin with sweet white flesh. Pollinate with D’Anjou, Bosc, or Winter Nellis for better production. Enjoy them fresh off of the tree.

Seckel

Connoisseurs’ favorite! Sweet, flavorful, aromatic, spicy, what more could you wish for! Russet brown skin. 500-800 chill hrs. The more hours...the better! Self-fruitful. Resists fireblight.

Chill Hours

Cold chill hours can be a little confusing. Basically they are the number of hours below 45°F subtracting the number of hours above 60°F between the months of November and February.

If you live in or around any of these areas, your average chill hours are:

  • Malibu, Ventura, Santa Barbara: ± 300 Hours
  • San Fernando Valley, Fillmore, Simi Valley: ± 800 Hours or less
  • Santa Clarita, Lancaster: 800 Hours or more

There is no simple test for “Chill Hours” and they are calculated as an average. Each winter season differs in total chill hours accumulated, which can affect fruit production. Most of the fruit trees we carry at Otto & Sons are classified as low chill requirement and are better matched for our Southern California chill hours.
