Semi dwarf (S/D) trees may be held to desired size by summer pruning and regular winter pruning. Average height without summer pruning is 14 feet.

 

Fantasia

Semi-Dwarf, requires no pollinizer, chill hrs/500, produces a large crop in late July early August. Large, yellow freestone. Early harvest is tangy, late harvest is sweet, with rich flavor. Very popular. A true taste treat.

Goldmine

Semi-Dwarf trees, No pollinizer needed, chill hrs/400 and bears in August. Small to medium size white-flesh. Freestone. Aromatic, juicy & sweet. A long time favorite in California. Good for home use.

Nectar Babe Miniature

Dwarf. Excellent quality fruit, ripening mid-late July. A Freestone that is sweet & delicious. Very flavorful. Heavy bearing & staying at 5-6 ft. tall. Needs 450 chill hrs. Pollinate with a peach or another nectarine.

Panamint

Semi-Dwarf tree, pollinizer not needed, chill hrs/250, ripens in late July early August. Red skin, yellow flesh. Freestone. Aromatic, intense flavor. Nice acid-sugar balance. Dependable, long-time favorite in So. Calif.                                                                                                                                   

Snow Queen

A Semi-Dwarf tree, no pollinizer needed, chill hrs/250, ripens in late June. TASTE TEST WINNER! Sweet, juicy, white flesh. Freestone Very popular & dependable. Early season production. Consistent producer So. California.

Chill Hours

Cold chill hours can be a little confusing. Basically they are the number of hours below 45°F subtracting the number of hours above 60°F between the months of November and February.

If you live in or around any of these areas, your average chill hours are:

  • Malibu, Ventura, Santa Barbara: ± 300 Hours
  • San Fernando Valley, Fillmore, Simi Valley: ± 800 Hours or less
  • Santa Clarita, Lancaster: 800 Hours or more

There is no simple test for “Chill Hours” and they are calculated as an average. Each winter season differs in total chill hours accumulated, which can affect fruit production. Most of the fruit trees we carry at Otto & Sons are classified as low chill requirement and are better matched for our Southern California chill hours.
