Black Jack

Semi-Dwarf, self-fruitful, chill hours:100. Harvest August to October. Large, purplish-brown figs with sweet, juicy, strawberry-red flesh.

Black Mission

Standard size tree, self-pollinizing, chill hours: 100. Produces in June. Medium to large fruit. Pear shaped with purplish-black skin. Strawberry colored flesh with good flavor. Long lived, large tree. Excellent fresh or dried.

Brown Turkey

Standard size tree, self-pollinizing, chill hours: 100. Bears in July. Medium to large bell shaped fruit. Purplish-brown skin, strawberry colored flesh, sweet, good flavor. Best eaten fresh.

Panache                               

Especially fine flavor! Small to med sized fruit w/green clor skin & yellow Tiger Stripes. Strawberry pulp is blood-red in color. 100 chill hrs. Self-fruitful.

Violette de Bordeaux

500 year old ’French’ variety making a giant comeback because of mature 10 ft. size. Compact / smaller than Black Jack. Excellent for containers & limited area. Small-medium purple black fruit with Strawberry red pulp, distinctive sweet/rich flavor. Bears late summer into fall. Espaliers easily.

White Kadota

Standard tree, self-pollinizing, chill hrs/100, bears 2 crops, Aug. to Nov. Large fruit. Light greenish-yellow ‘white’ skin. Amber flesh. Long lived, vigorous. Prune to any shape. Very sweet, needs hot weather to ripen. Enjoy fresh or dried.

White Genoa

Standard tree, self-pollinizing, chill hrs/100, bears 2 crops, Aug. to Nov. Medium to large fruit. Yellowish thin skin with pinkish-white flesh. Produces very well in coastal areas. Enjoy fresh or dried.

Li Jujube

Chinese date. Round shaped fruits, reddish brown & wrinkled, sweet, chewy (like dates) when ripe in the Fall. Virtually pest & disease free! Requires summer heat. Very low chilling. Pollinate with Lang variety for a larger crop. Self-pollinizing.

Chill Hours

Cold chill hours can be a little confusing. Basically they are the number of hours below 45°F subtracting the number of hours above 60°F between the months of November and February.

If you live in or around any of these areas, your average chill hours are:

  • Malibu, Ventura, Santa Barbara: ± 300 Hours
  • San Fernando Valley, Fillmore, Simi Valley: ± 800 Hours or less
  • Santa Clarita, Lancaster: 800 Hours or more

There is no simple test for “Chill Hours” and they are calculated as an average. Each winter season differs in total chill hours accumulated, which can affect fruit production. Most of the fruit trees we carry at Otto & Sons are classified as low chill requirement and are better matched for our Southern California chill hours.
