Semi dwarf (S/D) trees may be held to desired size by summer pruning and regular winter pruning. Average height without summer pruning is 12-18 feet.

Blenheim (Royal)

Semi-Dwarf, no pollinizer required, chill hr/400, bears late-June to early July. All purpose freestone, sweet, aromatic & flavorful. #1 Apricot in Calif. Great for canning & drying also. Flesh is pale orange & juicy.

Flavor Giant

Semi-Dwarf, no pollinizer required, chill hrs/600, bears May to June. Earliest of the apricots. Heavy crop of extremely large, sweet-tart, flavorful fruit. High quality.

Gold Kist

Semi-Dwarf, no pollinizer required, chill hrs/300, ripens early June. Excellent ‘backyard’ apricot for So. Calif. Freestone. Bears heavily. Very good quality.

Katy

Semi-Dwarf, no pollinizer needed, chill hrs/300, bears in July. Large fruit, freestone, very flavorful. A favorite for warm climates. Tree ripe fruit is sub-acid, not tart. Bears 3-4 weeks before Blenheim.

Pixie-Cot

Miniature. Compact tree, medium size fruit.  Ripens in June. Chill hrs. 500. The FIRST Genetic Dwarf Apricot to meet the flavor Standards at Dave Wilson Nursery!

Standard size trees should reach 20 feet plus. Summer & winter prune to control. Fast growing, give plenty of room and be ready for an amazing and flavorful crop!

Flavor Delight

Apricot/Plum hybrid with a flavor all-its-own: Distinctive!. One of the most flavorful early season fruits. Very low chill requirements: 200 hours. You will enjoy this one. Ripens early July. Self-fruitful. Pollinize with another apricot for a larger crop!

Chill Hours

Cold chill hours can be a little confusing. Basically they are the number of hours below 45°F subtracting the number of hours above 60°F between the months of November and February.

If you live in or around any of these areas, your average chill hours are:

  • Malibu, Ventura, Santa Barbara: ± 300 Hours
  • San Fernando Valley, Fillmore, Simi Valley: ± 800 Hours or less
  • Santa Clarita, Lancaster: 800 Hours or more

There is no simple test for “Chill Hours” and they are calculated as an average. Each winter season differs in total chill hours accumulated, which can affect fruit production. Most of the fruit trees we carry at Otto & Sons are classified as low chill requirement and are better matched for our Southern California chill hours.
